With overwhelming weight and dissatisfaction, the priest whose name was QuYuan hopped to the stream to end it all. Ordinary citizens needed to shield his body from fish by tossing rice dumplings to the stream. From that point forward, individuals began to eat rice dumplings in memory of him. Customary nourishments like â€Å"Nian-gao†, †Yuebing†, and â€Å"Zongzi† in Chinese celebrations have experienced numerous adjustments in flavors or plans, yet for Chinese individuals, the conventional plans and the importance, legend, authentic story will never be overlooked. Importance of Fear in The Lord of the Flies Essay

Importance of Fear in The Lord of the Flies The boys in the book, The Lord of the Flies, are controlled by their fear of the beast. This fear is not of the beast itself, but of the unknown. It comes from not knowing whether or not a beast exists. The children start as one united group. They are a community in their own. Slowly, rules started to get broken, individuals began to leave, and the group broke apart. The one thing that causes this break-up is the beast. The beast means different things to everyone, but each boy is afraid of it. All of this fear starts at one of the very first assemblies when a littlun says that he saw a beastie in the forest. Now he says it was a beastie†¦show more content†¦Remember? The two older boys flinched when they heard the shameful syllable (52). This reminds Jack and Ralph that there is a chance that the beast is real and there may be reason for all the fear. It also reveals that Simons character is very much in touch with reality. He is not trying to push the fact that a beast could be on the island away from him. He is trying to deal with his fear and show the others that they can and should deal with theirs. Ralphs concern for the littluns leads him to call an assembly to decide on fear (82). This assembly on fear is an essential part of the story. Ralph wants to discuss the fear of the beastie, and whether there is reason to be afraid of a beast that may not exist. He then proceeds to make this speech: Weve got to talk about this fear and decide theres nothing in it. Im frightened myself, sometimes; only thats nonsense! Like bogies. Then, when weve decided, we can start again and be careful about things like the fire (82). The purpose of this speech is to comfort the other boys and eliminate the fear. He wants them to turn their focus away from fear towards the fire and rescue. After Ralph puts the conch down Jack snatches it up and starts blaming the littluns for all the fear, saying that they brought it upon themselves by believing in the beast. The Time Of Change In The Region Called The Borderlands Occurred Durin

The time of change in the region called the "borderlands" occurred during the period between 1880 and 1940. The region became urbanized and ended its years of isolation from the rest of the world. In the past the region's economy was based on ranching and farming. As the region became more urbanized the economy changed. The economy did not change equally between the United States and Mexico, the United States' side of the border boomed while Mexico's side did not. The cities that did prosper in region were based on the actions of the United States. Actions that affected the cities in Mexico were Prohibition and the Great depression. Events in the United States were not the only economic factor to effect the region. The Mexican Revolution had great social and economic influence to the region. On November 10 1910, the Mexican Revolution began and did not end until President Diaz was overthrown. The United States and its border towns were heavily involved in the conflict. The fighting was mainly in the north and they need supplies. The majority of the weapons and supplies for the Revolution was brought in the United States. The border cities in the United States became the chief suppliers of guns to the Revolution. This form trade was illegal and mainly done on the Black Market. The legal trade that existed before the Revolution disappeared with the outbreak of war. Mexico had closed the border during the conflict to prevent the supply of arms. The United States had also tried to stop the flow of arms but not successful. Eventually the United States had sent troops to the region when the fighting spilled over the border. The troops stayed in the region after the Mexican Revolution and were an economic boom to the region. The United States at the turn of the century was under going a major social movement. The United States was trying to change its society to a more moral country. The groups involved in the movement consisted of many groups from around the United States. Some of the most notable groups involved in the social reform movement were the churches in the country. They targeted many aspects of life of the normal Americans. The social reforms targeted social ills such as adultery, crime, and lastly, drinking. These groups had large number of followers, and had considerable height in government. The social reformers political power extended from small town mayors to U.S. Congressmen and Senators. The reformers were able to get many local governments to become "dry" county, that is to outlaw alcohol. The reformers ultimate goal was to outlaw alcohol entirely in the United States. They succeeded in the late 1920's with the passage of the Volstead Act and an amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Once the Volstead Act was passed it was illegal to produce, sell, or consume alcohol in the United States. Many refineries, distilleries and bars closed in the United States and moved across the border. Mexico benefited greatly from Prohibition when drinking moved across the border. The area of greatest economical boom was at the border towns, in particular Ciudard Juarez and Tujauna. Cuidad Juarez and Tujuana both benefited from U.S. tourism before Prohibition. The cities mainly benefited from adult tourism, in particular bars and prostitution. This business was started during the Mexican Revolution when President Wilson sent U.S. troops to guard the border. The soldiers stationed on the border, numbering as high as 10,000 men, needed entertainment. The troops would go across the border to engage in activities not widely available on the U.S. side. After the Mexican Revolution the U.S. troops remained on the border, so the adult entertainment industry continued to grow. This growth was mainly limited to the number of troops and where they were stationed. It was not until Prohibition that the adult tourism exploded on the U.S.-Mexico border. The passage of the Volstead Act outlawed alcohol in the United States, but this did not apply to Mexico. Many bars closed and moved to a location across the border. The bar's patrons also followed the bars south of the border. Before Prohibition, the bars in the Mexican border towns main clientele was U.S. soldiers, after Prohibition everybody from the United States visited the bars. The two cities that benefited the most from Prohibition were Cuidad Juarez and Tujauna. In Cuidad Juarez there were 72 bars and 11 liquor distilleries catering mostly to Americans. El Paso, across the border from Cuidad Juarez, becomes the largest

Spelling Variations

Spelling Variations Spelling Variations Spelling Variations By Mark Nichol This post discusses several factors responsible for variations in spelling, with examples. For much of the history of the English language, spelling was more an art than a science; because of lapses in literacy, there was no standard orthography. Even now, well into the twenty-first century, thanks to ignorance and laziness (and some intentional slangy sabotage), misspelling is rampant, so many people are unaware, for example, that alot is not an acceptable synonym for many or that definitely, not defiantly, is what you write when you mean â€Å"most assuredly.† Some valid reasons for alternate spellings exist, however. One annoying but hopelessly entrenched cause of spelling variations can be blamed on American lexicographer and spelling reformer Noah Webster, who advocated diverging from English orthography in favor of a uniquely American (but frustratingly inconsistent) spelling system. Fortunately, many of his suggestions failed to catch on, but others prevailed, so that now we have such international discrepancies as defense/defence, honor/honour, meter/metre, and realize/realise. (See this post for a more detailed discussion with more examples.) Often, writers in the United States are unclear on the distinction, so that we see, for example, judgement instead of judgment, or grey when gray is correct. This kind of thing can get confusing when, for example, an exception is made for glamour but not glamorous and glamorize, or when woolen is spelled as such but woolly takes a different form because of the adverbial inflectional ending. Another complicating factor is when the British English spellings centre and theatre are employed in signage for venues in the United States. It’s easy enough, though distracting, for someone raised to read American English to understand written British English, and vice versa. But many international businesses publish materials reflecting both systems to distribute to various global audiences as appropriate, and book publishers have been known to change from one to the other when creating new editions of already published books. (I know this because I’ve been the one responsible for making or checking the changes in both contexts.) However, it’s nearly impossible to catalog (or is it catalogue?) the distinctions (though one can try). Spelling can also vary based on context. For example, antennae and antennas are both correct, but the appropriate spelling depends on the subject matter (anatomical and technical, respectively), and the plural of appendix can be treated appendixes or appendices. (See this post for more examples.) Another type of variation is one based on informal usage: Donut as a variation of doughnut and thru as a truncation of through are valid in certain contexts, but careful writers will use the standard spellings in formal writing. The same goes for yes/yeah and no/nope; in each case, the second alternative has its place, but that place is only when slang is appropriate, as in dialogue. And nonstandard spellings like lite and nite are acceptable only for playful proper nouns (as in the name of a product or a venue.) In addition, spelling sherbet with an extra r (sherbert) may reflect the way the word is often pronounced, but that misspelling is just as egregious as the unholy union of alot and the misuse of defiantly. And spelling the term for a short-sleeved pullover top â€Å"tee shirt† ignores the fact that it was named for the shape of the garment when laid out flat and should therefore be styled T-shirt. Sometimes, older spellings of words persist, as when both analog and analogue or omelet and omelette are variably employed; in such cases (actually, in all cases) let the dictionary be your guide. The Role of Zoos in Endangered Species Conservation

The Role of Zoos in Endangered Species Conservation The worlds best zoos offer face-to-face encounters with some of the most fascinating and rare creatures on the planet- an experience that few people would ever be able to pursue in the wild. Unlike the cramped cages that housed wild animals in sideshow spectacles of the past, the modern zoo has elevated habitat emulation to an art, carefully recreating natural environments and offering inhabitants challenging activities to reduce boredom and stress. The evolution of zoos has also included programs dedicated to protecting endangered species, both in captivity and in the wild. Zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) participate in Species Survival Plan Programs that involve captive breeding, reintroduction programs, public education, and field conservation to ensure survival for many of the planets threatened and endangered species. Conservation Breeding AZA conservation breeding programs (also known as captive breeding programs) are designed to augment populations of endangered species and avoid extinction via regulated breeding in zoos and other approved facilities. One of the primary challenges facing captive breeding programs is maintaining genetic diversity. If the population of a captive breeding program is too small, inbreeding may result, leading to health problems that can have a negative impact on the species survival. For this reason, breeding is carefully managed to ensure as much genetic variation as possible. Fast Facts: Six Species Saved From Extinction by Zoos Arabian Oryx: Hunted to extinction in the wild, the Arabian Oryx  was revitalized thanks to conservation efforts of Phoenix Zoo  and others. As of 2017, 1,000 animals had been restored to the wild, while thousands more were living in zoo environments.Przewalski’s Horse: The only truly wild species left in the world, Przewalski’s Horse is native to the grasslands of Central Asia. After being declared completely extinct in the wild, it’s made an amazing comeback.California Condor: Not all that long ago, there were only 27 of these magnificent birds left. Thanks to conservation efforts from the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo, hundreds of California Condors have been reintroduced into the wild.Bongo: The  Eastern Bongo, a large antelope native to a remote region of Kenya was one of the last large mammal species to be discovered but poaching and loss of habitat nearly wiped them out.  Zoos worldwide are  to working to establish a stable p opulation to ensure their survival.Panamanian Golden Frog:  Beautiful but extremely poisonous, the entire species succumbed to the effects of a devastating fungal disease in the wild. Since 2007, existing captive populations abetted by collaborative conservation efforts by a number of zoos have staved off their extinction.Golden Lion Tamarin: Close to extinction due to loss of habitat from logging and mining, as well as poaching in its native Brazil, there has been a steady effort since the 1980s to ensure this species doesn’t vanish from the face of the Earth. Currently, about one-third of wild Golden Lion Tamarins come from breeding programs.Source: Taronga Conservation Society Australia Reintroduction Programs The goal of reintroduction programs is to release animals that have been raised or rehabilitated in zoos back into their natural habitats. AZA describes these programs as powerful tools used for stabilizing, re-establishing, or increasing in situ animal populations that have suffered significant declines. In cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the IUCN Species Survival Commission, AZA-accredited institutions have established reintroduction programs for endangered animals such as the black-footed ferret, California condor, freshwater mussel, and Oregon spotted frog. Public Education Zoos educate millions of visitors each year about endangered species and related conservation issues. Over the past 10 years, AZA-accredited institutions have also trained more than 400,000 teachers with award-winning science curricula. A nationwide study including more than 5,500 visitors from 12 AZA-accredited institutions found that visits to zoos and aquariums prompt individuals to reconsider their role in environmental problems and see themselves as part of the solution. Field Conservation Field conservation focuses on the long-term survival of species in natural ecosystems and habitats. Zoos participate in conservation projects that support studies of populations in the wild, species recovery efforts, veterinary care for wildlife disease issues, and conservation awareness. AZA sponsors a landing page on the National Geographic Societys Global Action Atlas, featuring worldwide conservation projects associated with participating zoos. Success Stories Today, 31 animal species classified as Extinct in the Wild are being bred in captivity. Reintroduction efforts are underway for six of these species, including the Hawaiian crow. According to the IUCN, conservation breeding and reintroduction have helped prevent the extinction of six out of 16 critically endangered bird species and nine out of 13 mammal species, including species previously classified as Extinct in the Wild. The Future of Zoos and Captive Breeding A study recently published in the journal Science supports the establishment of specialized zoos and a network of captive breeding programs that target species facing an acute risk of extinction. According to the study, Specialization generally increases breeding success. The animals can be parked at these zoos until they have a chance of survival in the natural environment and can then be returned to the wild. Endangered species breeding programs will also help scientists better understand population dynamics critical to the management of animals in the wild.

Mary, mother of god Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Mary, mother of god - Essay Example First off, the purity of Mary presupposes that she was planned by God to be the extra-ordinary person far from any stains. She is an etalon of the female immaculate power able to touch on each and every heart and soul. She was blessed before she was chosen to bear Jesus in her womb, and, therefore, she was free from the wicked human nature, i.e. from sins as they are (Sheen 38). Thereupon, one is to remember that the blessing of Mary spread over those who once chose Jesus as their savior. On the other hand, at the moment of Mary’s conception she became the first effect of redemption and order of mercy as she came to refuge sinners (Shea 29). Thus, by praying to Mary one should understand her initial significance in the scattering of the first and foremost teaching out of the gospel. To say more, Catholics should not get themselves into the pit of fallacies forgetting about the rest of the Bible and the predominant role of Jesus Christ in saving the humanity. Mary is the beginning of the universal virginity salvation as she was immaculate enough that God beloved her to be the Mother of Child. Shea unveils the need for seeking God’s wisdom between Mary and saints by saying the following words: â€Å"Looking to a florid prayer to Mary or a saint is an excellent way to get a grasp of how Catholics with a strong Marian piety feel† (30). This is why the rational of prayer to the saints rediscovers and allegedly opens the way toward better understanding of the Mystical Body of Christ, meaning the Church itself. Mary could crush the cobra’s head, so to speak, by means of her as a medium between holiness of God and sins of people around. Given that, it is vital to amplify that Mary is the Mother of the â€Å"greatest man ever born of woman† and piety of Catholics leads to pure and clear understanding of God’s will (Sheen 73). Hereby, Mary, promulgates the birth of Jesus who brought the World’s teaching so vivid and

American president wilson's fourteen ponits and the importance of such Term Paper

American president wilson's fourteen ponits and the importance of such a plan for the world - Term Paper Example The 14 points from Wilson’s speech were a general outline of any treaty the U.S. would sign. This outline included diplomacy must be open, free international waters, world trade encouraged through lowered economic barriers, low army upkeep, colonial claims adjusted, the new territorial boundaries that returned land to Russia, Belgium, France, and Italy, Turkey and Poland would become sovereign nations, Austria-Hungary should have free autonomous development, Rumania, Serbia, and Montenegro should be evacuated by Central Powers, and a league of Nations should be formed (Wilson 1917). All of these suggestions, along with reparations and other demands by England and France came about, except for the League of Nations. Wilson was a man before his time, because the U.N. would form after WWII. In 1917, the world was not ready for a global body of like the U.N., or the League of Nations. The 14 points was also used as propaganda to help bolster Wilson’s war and to give the Germans a message. The message given must have been the right one, since Germany surrendered without being totally overrun like in WWII. The United States wanted these points to be addressed in any treaty discussed. The Versailles Treaty’s harsh measures were due to England, France, and other negotiating countries. America did go along with these harsh terms, not realizing the oppressive terms would lead to

Teen Curfews are NOT Necessary Essay -- miscellaneous

Teen Curfews are NOT Necessary â€Å"In one study the average adult surmised that teens amount for forty-three percent of all violent crimes, when in reality the number is only a mere thirteen percent, and this number is made up of only half a percent of minors.† (Stoup, Page 1) Teenagers should not be forced to follow a ridged time schedule because of a curfew. Curfews severely reduce the amount of time that minors have to do things like youth events or church groups. Some people believe that youth are inexperienced drivers that cause accidents and that a curfew would limit these accidents. Think about that for a moment removing teenagers from the road would reduce accidents but Wouldn’t Removing People aged thirty-forty also reduce traffic accidents does that mean that they are inexperienced drivers. Curfews are a quick to a much bigger problem youth are not the only ones committing crimes. Eighty-seven percent of crime is caused by adults over the age of eighteen and the amount of minors causing c rimes is only half a percent. Legitimate Reasons some Teens have them â€Å"Many will have part-time jobs, for example in fast-food restaurants or delivering newspapers. Others will wish to participate in activities such as church groups, youth clubs or school trips. Requiring adults always to take them to and from such activities is unreasonable and will ensure that many never take place in the first place, either because adults are unwilling, or are unable to do so.† (Endersby Page 3) S...

The Purpose and Function of University Education

Purposes and functions of university education: My own reflection With the six year hard works in my secondary studies, finally I get into university. I am relieved that there is no more past paper and public examination on one hand but I find that I am lost on the other hand. As a freshman, the experience in first month of university life is out of my expectation: I am totally free! There are so many spare times and so few coursework to do. No more control from the class teachers. No more annoying reminders from my parents. All I have got is the time to play, play and play (and a little time for lessons, of course). When September has come to an end and October comes as an old friend, I start to wonder: Should my university life go like this? It seems that I am getting lost in a big forest, losing my way, since I do not have a goal. When I was studying in secondary school, there was one goal waiting for me to achieve – getting into university. Now, I have attained it. Then, wh at’s next? â€Å"University is not equal to vocational training institute. My class teacher has once told me. Now it appears in my mind suddenly. In theory, what you have chosen to study is highly likely to be your career after you graduate. Taking the BBA students as an example, which is the commonest, they are likely to participate in jobs related to finance when they finish their tertiary studies, and it is undeniable in practice. But would the same happen to students of arts like me? If I am going to take criminology as my major in year 2, what is my job going to be in the future? A policewoman? The future female Sherlock Holmes? If university is a place where you are going to decide your future career by your major, does it sound sensible that students major in English should be an English teacher? Definitely not, since there are many possibilities even you are majoring in English. Even though you are practicing a specific skill in university, it does not mean that you s hould give up the opportunity to discover new things. The theory I have just mentioned above is true, however, not absolutely true, especially to the arts students.Since there are many possibilities in the university life, I know that I will be given different chances to try out different things, which is new to me, and it will enable me to discover myself, know more about myself. I am convinced that this is the function of university education – providing a space for learning, discovering, and experiencing. Throughout these three processes, the main purpose of university education – rising up students who are able to think independently and work as a team or individually, can be fulfilled.Apparently, how to have a good job is the last thing for me to consider right now. At this moment, my goal is try to become an active learner, who can ask questions with confidence, get involved in the classes and clubs, and eventually become self-independent and self- initiative, wh ich is a vital characteristic I believe that it is more important than getting a high GPA. â€Å"Learn how to learn†, this is the reason why I am here, studying in university.

Space Tornadoes - Seen in Space or from Space

Space tornadoes is a weather term that can have 2 different meanings. A space tornado can mean a tornado that occurs in outer space or it can mean terrestrial tornadoes that can be seen from space. Keep in mind that only terrestrial tornadoes on Earth are technically classified as a real tornado. Cosmic Tornadoes from Young Stars Solar Windstorm Tornadoes auroras New research from the University of California has made detailed measurements of these space tornadoes, also known as substorm current wedges. According to a National Geographic News story, space tornadoes kick-start terrestrial auroras. The University of California team has discovered that space tornadoes form at least every three hours and take just a minute to reach the ionosphere. Tornadoes from Space weather satellites Weather on Other Planets Hows the Weather on Other Planets? is an excellent site to tour the typical weather on other planets.
